True Grit - Charles Portis, Donna Tartt i enjoyed this book quite a lot, especially the character of mattie ross: what a firecracker she is, and only 14 years old! i could have told her she was never going to get married, even before i read about the stump arm, and convalescent mother -- i guess that's why she lists her intelligence and sharp tongue as deterrents before them.

it's hard to read about rooster cogburn without envisioning john wayne, even though i was a kid when i watched it with my father. i seem to have no difficult excising glen campbell's leboeuf from my mind.

the dialogue is snappy and the whole book moves at a good pace. another example of the tight writing of charles portis.
